41 Great Lakes Cartridge Conversions

I am pleased to announce that we have been authorized to convert rifles to the new 41 Great Lakes Cartridge. Only authorized gunsmiths and makers are licensed by the designer, to chamber for this new cartridge.

As you may be aware, Michigan and other states, allow the use of a straight-walled cartridge for deer hunting in what was a shotgun / muzzleloader only zone. Here in Michigan that would be zone 3 The requirement is any straight taper case that is longer than 1.16 inches and no longer than 1.80 inches.

The 41 Great Lakes Cartridge is 1.7 inches long and was derived from a 30/06 parent case. I understand from the developer of the round, there may soon be virgin brass available. Right now, (during the 2025 firearms deer season) here is a source for ammunition:

The variety of bullet shapes and weights is expanding. The current offerings range from 185 gr - 240 gr. One of the newest loads is a 205gr Maker that leaves a 24” barrel at 2900 fps generating 3826 ft/lbs of energy. Fantastic!

I’m currently working with the developer on producing dies for the 41 Great lakes. I’m hoping to get through R&D by spring 2026. More coming on that.

I supply a Premium Douglas barrel in either Chrome Moly or Stainless in a 1:14 twist up to 24” finished length. However, you can have any shorter length down to 16.25” We find that 22” works very well with this round, but 24” yields the best velocity and energy. The standard contour for the 41 caliber bore is a 5A. I don’t supply any other twist nor do I recommend any twist other than 1:14.

I can convert any standard bolt action or single shot action that supports a 308 Winchester length round. Long actions can also be used as long as we alter the magazine for the shorter round. The 41 Great Lakes is based on a .473” diameter cartridge head, so the donor rifle needs to support this bolt head style. However, I can modify magnum bolt faces and install a M-16 extractor in case the donor rifle is of the Short Magnum type

Currently I am not accepting gas operated rifles or rifles that require a barrel lockup extension. What is a barrel lockup extension? This is an extension that is part of the barrel and provides bolt lugs to retain the bolt. Remington 760 and 7600 are prime examples of this as well as the Browning BLR. The exception to this restriction is the AR-15 and AR-10 rifles. Extensions for the barrel are available from various sources.

I am happy to discuss your ideas and as always, I am open to the odd request that requires creative thinking and solutions
